Að venja fólk af flöskunni

Það eru alltaf fleiri og fleiri sem kjósa flöskuna, það þekki ég vel sjálfur enda ber ég flöskurnar eins og múlasni hingað heim að Bjórá.  Þegar ég vil fá gott kaffi þá teygi ég mig í flöskuna (geri það nánast alltaf).

En yfirvöld vilja spyrna við fótum og nú er komin upp þó nokkur hreyfing hér í Kanada sem vill gera flöskuna útlæga úr skólum og opinberum stofnunum. 

Plastið og einnota umbúðir eru víða gerðar útlægar.  Nú er til dæmis ekki neinir plastpokar í LCBO (ríkinu) lengur, heldur aðeins bréfpokar. 

Næst á dagskrá er að venja börnin af því að drekka vatn úr flöskum og koma þeim á kranann.

Persónulega held ég að það verði seint sem ég á eftir að drekka eingöngu kranavatn hér að Bjórá.  Klórbragðið eitt og sér er eitthvað sem mér gengur seint að venja mig við. 

Hitt er annað mál að ég hef aldrei getað skilið hvernig hægt er að selja vatn á flöskum á Íslandi.

Í nýlegri grein í National Post sagði m.a.:

"Bottled water could be removed from hundreds of school vending machines as early as next year as school boards raise concerns about the environmental impact of all those billions of disposable flasks that don't end up in the recycle bin.

The Toronto and Ottawa-Carleton school districts are following the example recently set by the Waterloo Region District School Board and will vote this year on whether to phase out the bottles by 2009. In Toronto 104 secondary and 106 elementary schools have vending machines. Last year, schools sold about 8,545 cases of water."

"Andrea Harden-Donahue with the Ottawa based think-tank Polaris Institute says the trend of drinking designer "purified" water is reversing back to tap water.

"A lot of people are looking at water as a fundamental right like education is a fundamental right."

But Griswold argues that more attention should be placed on recycling programs. "Schools are losing out on a real opportunity to teach students about recycling."

Universities, often considered hotbeds for social change, have also joined the effort to get rid of the bottle.

Memorial University in Newfoundland, Thompson Rivers University in B.C., the University of Ottawa and the University of Guelph are just some of the campuses that now have what students call "bottle free zones."

"The idea is to get rid of bottles one space at a time," said Harden-Donahue, who runs a campaign to lobby schools to join the program.

The United Church of Canada is also urging its 590,000 members to stop purchasing bottled water, calling water a "sacred gift for all life."

Lynn Scott, chair of the Ottawa-Carleton School District said the idea has gained momentum but added that parents have concerns that would need to be addressed before they move forward."

"Gordon Dewis, a research analyst for the federal agency, says 16 per cent of households preferred bottled water in 1994. That rose to 22 per cent in 1999 and then to 30 per cent in 2006.

"There could be any number of reasons why people might be drinking more bottled water from marketing, to perceived negative incidents like Walkerton. We don't know why those people chose to drink bottled water."

Last week both London, Ont., and the southeastern B.C. city of Nelson voted in favour of banning the water bottle in all city offices, parks and other recreational areas.

Charlottetown decided to stop buying bottled water in 2007."

Hef reyndar prófað þetta "trix".  Vissulega er það svo að eftir því sem vatnið er kaldara, og þar af leiðandi "shockið" meira á bragðlaukana þegar því er skellt upp í sig, er bragðskynið minna og því "bragðast" vatnið betur.

Ég hef sömuleiðis prufað ýmsar síur, og "bragðað" í gegnum þær, þó að þær geri flestar eitthvað gagn.

Ef ég skil vatn eftir í skál á eldhúsborðinu yfir nótt, hverfur vissulega mesti klórinn, en þá er vatnið heldur ekki ferskt og það finnst sömuleiðis á bragðinu.

Íslendingar kunna flestir ekki að meta þá auðlind sem þeir hafa í vatninu sínu, uns þeir eru án þess.
